Downtown Munich

„Victuals“ is the latin word for food. Within a period of 200 years the Viktualienmarkt developed from a traditional famer’s market to a popular shopping destination for gourmets in Munich’s Old City. It take’s daily place, except on Sundays and Holidays, and consists mostly of permanent market stands.

The cathedral in the Old City of Munich named Frauenkirche was constructed in 1494 and has been the cathedral of the archbishops of Munich Freising for the past 200 years. The three nave late Gothic red brick building with its two towers is widely regarded as the emblem of the Bavarian capital.

The Marienplatz has been considered the central square of Munich since the city was founded by Henry the Lion in 1158. It is located at the crossroad of the two main axes: the east-west axes between Isartor and Karlstor and the north-south axes between Sendlingertor and Schwabing Tor. It is located in the middle of the pedestrian zone and is a popular popular shopping destination and venue.

The Theatinerstraße connects the Odeonplatz with the Weinstraße at the Marienplatz and is considered as one of Munich’s most elegant and luxury shopping streets. A part from an excellent range of shops you will find there the luxury shopping centre called „Fünf Höfe“. The emblem of the street is the Baroque Theatrinerkirche.

The Leopoldsstraße is the continuation of the Ludwigsstraße, the boulevard of King Ludwig I, north of the Siegestor. This street contains the Siegestor, the academy of arts, the Münchner Freiheit and the large scale-sculpture „Walking Man“ by Jonathan Borofsky. For various events like the Munich Marathon or street festivals (for example the street live festival during summer) parts or even the whole street gets closed.
